Is it Wise to get a bank card just for travelling?

June 28, 2025

Recently I had been thinking about getting a travel bank card. Mainly for more safety when paying abroad. With a travel card, you only transfer the amount you need. No need to keep a large balance on the account, so if something happens, your main account stays safe. We now have multiple travels coming up to countries with different currencies, so it kind of makes more sense.

I looked into several options. As an Estonian, I felt naturally drawn to Wise (formerly TransferWise), since it was founded by two Estonians with the goal of making money transfers fair and transparent. I really like the concept – and after going through the details, it actually looks like a pretty good deal. With Wise, you can:

  • Spend abroad with low, clear fees
  • Pay with a card in over 160 countries
  • Hold and convert 50+ currencies
  • Get local account details in EUR, USD, GBP, and more
  • Wise lets you hold and spend money in multiple currencies – at the real exchange rate

I added the virtual card to my phone wallet and can now pay with just a tap. The virtual card is totally free. It works well in places like Norway, where almost everything is contactless.

For other countries, it makes sense to have the physical card (currently one time cost 7€), so you can retrieve money from the ATM (two retrievals up to 200€/month is without a fee).

You like this idea?

If you sign up with my link or any of your other friends referral link you will get:
✔️ A free Wise card (if available in your region)
or ✔️ Zero fees on a transfer up to €500

Click my link to sign up or just go to their website and sign up there, because it is a smart thing to do if you travel a lot internationally. We are soon leaving for our trip to Norway, so I am excited to try it out.
