Exploring Kaleiçi: Antalya’s Historic Old Town | Travel in Türkiye

May 04, 2025

Kaleiçi is the old town of Antalya (Türkiye), a small walled area packed with history, culture, and charm. It’s where ancient empires left their mark, and where quiet streets invite you to slow down and explore on foot.

History and Culture

Kaleiçi dates back to Roman times. The city was later shaped by the Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. You’ll see layers of this history in the streets, walls, and buildings. The name “Kaleiçi” means “inside the castle.” It was once completely enclosed by defensive walls. Some sections still stand today, especially near the sea and around Hadrian’s Gate. Many of the houses you see now are restored Ottoman homes – wooden balconies, red-tiled roofs, stone courtyards. Some are private homes, others turned into hotels, shops, or cafes.

Sights

Hadrian’s Gate

Hadrian’s Gate is one of Antalya’s most famous landmarks, built in 130 AD to honor the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s visit to the city. The gate features three stone arches, four towers, and detailed white marble carvings, with the original Roman road stones still visible underfoot.

If you visit, stand at the base and look up – you can see every curve and detail of the unique design, it is simply incredible!

Walking through it feels like stepping back in time. The area is usually busy with tourists and street musicians, but in the early morning, it is quieter and easier to explore.

At night, the gate is beautifully lit, creating a different atmosphere.

The gate is located at the edge of Kaleiçi’s old city walls, so it is easy to reach by foot from anywhere in central Antalya and serves as a perfect starting point for exploring the old town.

Yivli Minaret

Yivli Minaret is one of Antalya’s oldest and most recognizable landmarks, built in the 13th century by the Seljuks. The tall, fluted minaret stands 38 meters high and is covered with dark blue tiles that catch the sunlight beautifully. It rises next to a mosque in the heart of the old city, easy to spot from many parts of Kaleiçi. Our favourite spot was from the viewpoint of the Rebublic Square Cumhuriyet Meydanı, you will have a lovely view over the roofs of Kaleiçi. Another place nearby that has a great view over the old town and old harbor is Kaleici Panoramic Elevator, which is also free to visit.

Hıdırlık Tower

Hıdırlık Tower stands at the edge of Kaleiçi, where the old city meets the sea. Built by the Romans in the 2nd century, the tower is a simple stone structure with a square base and a round top. It was likely used as a watchtower or lighthouse. Today, it offers one of the best spots to watch the sunset over the Mediterranean. You can sit in the nearby park or grab a tea from a small café and enjoy the view.

Old Harbor and the pier

The old harbor in Antalya is a small, sheltered bay surrounded by cliffs and stone walls. Once a busy trade port, today it is filled with fishing boats, yachts, and tour boats. Cafes and restaurants line the water, offering views of the sea and the boats coming and going. You can walk along the docks, take a boat tour, or just sit and watch the waves.

At the old harbor pier, you can sit right by the water and watch the boats sway gently in the bay. The pier is quiet compared to the busy streets above, making it a peaceful spot to relax. You see the old city walls rising behind you and the open sea stretching out ahead. It is a simple place, perfect for taking a break, listening to the waves, and enjoying the view.

Karaalioğlu Parkı Doğu Miradoru

A short walk from Kaleici you will find Doğu Miradoru, which is one of the best viewpoints in Antalya, offering wide views of the cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea. It sits at the eastern edge of Karaalioğlu Park, surrounded by trees, flowers, and walking paths. Near the viewpoint stands the large “Hand” statue, a dark metal sculpture of an open palm. It symbolizes peace, freedom, and hope. Many people stop here to take photos with the statue and the sea in the background. You can reach it easily with a short walk through the park’s shaded paths.

Just wander around

Kaleici is a perfect place just to wander around, because you have this amazing history all around you. As you walk, look out for fountains, mosques, shops and small museums tucked into corners. Unexpected wildlife

Türkiye is famous for its street cats, which roam freely in cities, towns, and villages. Locals often care for them, leaving out food, water, and small shelters. In places like Antalya, you see cats lounging in parks, cafes, and even inside shops. They are part of daily life and are treated with respect and affection.

Getting There, Parking

Kaleiçi is in the center of Antalya. If you’re staying nearby, it’s best to walk in.

By car:

  • Parking inside Kaleiçi is limited and mostly for locals or hotel guests.
  • Look for paid parking lots just outside the old town walls. The closest are near the clock tower (Saat Kulesi) or on Recep Peker Street.

If you’re using public transport, take a tram or bus to Kalekapısı stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the main gate.

Where to stay

If you are looking to spend some time in Kaleici, we are able to recommend a very nice small hotel right in the center of the old town.

La Paloma Hotel sits in the heart of Kaleiçi, Antalya’s old town, tucked inside narrow cobbled streets and just steps away from Hadrian’s Gate and the old harbor. The location makes it easy to explore cafes, shops, and historical sites on foot. If this peaked your interest, then check out our blog post about hotels we visited in Antalya.

A Few Important Tips

  • Wear sturdy shoes. The stone streets are uneven and slippery in places.
  • Bring water. If you are walking around, be sure to have a bottle of water with you.
  • Visit early or late. Midday heat and crowds can be intense, especially in summer.
  • Carry cash. Small shops and cafes may not accept cards.
  • Turkish food. Try local places down the side streets for better food and prices.
  • Stay overnight. There are plenty of small guesthouses and boutique hotels. The atmosphere changes completely after the day-trippers leave.

Final Thoughts

Kaleiçi isn’t just about sights – it’s about atmosphere. You don’t need a plan. Just walk, pause, and look around. History is everywhere, but it doesn’t shout. It’s quiet and present in the stones, walls, and daily life. If you like places that feel real and slightly hidden from time, Kaleiçi is worth your hours.
