Visiting Kasteel de Haar | Travel in The Netherlands

May 26, 2025

1. Why Visit Kasteel de Haar?

If you’re looking for a real fairytale experience in the Netherlands, Kasteel de Haar is a must-see. It’s the largest castle in the country, surrounded by moats, towers, and huge gardens. Just 15 minutes from Utrecht, it’s easy to visit on a day trip.

2. A Castle with Real History

The Castle was first built in the 14th century, but was left in ruins for hundreds of years. It was fully rebuilt from 1892 to 1912 by Pierre Cuypers (architect of the Rijksmuseum) and funded by the wealthy Rothschild family, who married into the Dutch Van Zuylen family. The new version blended medieval looks with modern comforts like central heating and electricity.

3. Step Inside: What to Expect

There are over 200 rooms in the castle, many filled with antiques, art, and family portraits. You can admire the luxurious woodwork, stained glass, and red velvet chairs.

Only part of the castle is open to the public, but it is definitely enough to leave an impression. Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family still owns part of the castle. They don’t live there full-time, but they stay for a few days each year in a private wing that’s closed to the public. This tradition continues from the days when the family hosted celebrities and elite guests during lavish summer stays. The rest of the year, the castle is managed by a foundation and open for visitors.

4. Stroll Through the Gardens

  • 135 acres of carefully designed parkland
  • Rose gardens, fountains, ponds, and open fields
  • Tree-lined paths perfect for quiet walks
  • A small deer park adds a peaceful, natural feel
  • Great spot for photography or a picnic on a sunny day

5. Special Events Worth Seeing

  • De Lumineuze Nachten Castle Lights (Dec–Jan): The gardens light up at night with thousands of lights, projections, and music. We were lucky enough to visit this event and it was marvellous!
  • Smaller seasonal exhibitions, theater, and open-air concerts also take place throughout the year

6. Famous Guests and Fun Facts

  • Still partly owned by the Van Zuylen family, who can stay there a few nights a year
  • Past guests include: Coco Chanel, Roger Moore, Brigitte Bardot, Gregory Peck
  • The guest wing was once the scene of elite parties and private gatherings
  • Some say Kasteel de Haar isn’t just rich in history – it’s also home to a few ghosts. Visitors and staff have reported strange sounds, cold spots, and lights flickering in empty rooms. And if you happen to be in one of the rooms by yourself your mind can play tricks on you and you kind of start feeling a presence. One of the legends speaks of a “White Lady” seen near the towers at night, believed to be a former resident who never left. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the castle’s long past and quiet corners definitely add to the eerie atmosphere.

8. Our tips for Your Visit

  • Always check the weather! If you are just interested in visiting the castle, the weather does not matter so much, but if you wish to have incredible photos of the castle and wander around the grounds, good weather is essential!
  • Bring snacks if you plan to spend hours walking the grounds, it is allowed to have picnics in the park!
  • Check the events calendar before you go – some days are more crowded and you might need to purchase an additional ticket!
  • Get your tickets at Kasteel de Haar’s official page! It is often cheaper than the reseller offers and you know there’s no monkey business going on. This is not an affiliate link, we just love this place that much!
  • To be sure, book your tickets online as the castle can sell out in high season. If the castle is sold out, you can still book tickets for the park.
  • If you are planning to visit more museums in The Netherlands, we suggest you purchasing THE MUSEUM PASS (Museumkaart) – it is truly incredible! For 75€ you can get access to more than 500 Dutch museums for one year. So if you’re a frequent visitor to The Netherlands or plan to visit 5 or more museums, it makes a lot of sense.
